Thermal Break Technology in Aluminium Profiles
How thermal break strips improve aluminium profile performance. Polyamide PA66 technology, U-value improvements and condensation prevention.

Polyamide Thermal Break Strips\n\nThermal break technology uses polyamide PA66 strips reinforced with 25% glass fibre to separate the inner and outer aluminium profile sections. This interrupts the thermal bridge that would otherwise conduct heat through the metal frame. The polyamide strip width (typically 20-35mm) directly influences the thermal performance improvement. Wider strips provide better insulation but require careful structural engineering to maintain load-bearing capacity.\n\n## U-Value Improvements\n\nStandard aluminium profiles without thermal breaks have frame U-values (Uf) of approximately 5-7 W/m2K. With thermal break technology, Uf values reduce to 1.5-2.5 W/m2K representing a 60-70% improvement. When combined with double or triple glazing, overall window U-values (Uw) of 0.8-1.2 W/m2K are achievable, meeting Passivhaus requirements. Alcodec uses advanced multi-chamber thermal break designs to optimise performance while maintaining structural integrity.\n\n## Condensation Prevention\n\nThe primary benefit of thermal breaks in colder climates is condensation prevention. Without thermal breaks, the inner surface of aluminium frames falls below the dew point temperature, causing moisture to form on the frame surface. This leads to mould growth, paint degradation, and potential structural damage over time. Thermal break profiles maintain inner surface temperatures above the dew point for typical indoor conditions of 20 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity.\n\n## Energy Cost Savings\n\nThermal break profiles reduce heat loss through the building envelope by 30-50% compared to standard aluminium systems. For a typical residential property with 20 square metres of aluminium-framed glazing, annual heating energy savings of 500-800 kWh can be expected. At current European energy prices, this represents savings of 100-200 euros per year with a payback period of 3-5 years for the premium over standard profiles.
