Bioclimatic Pergola: The Complete Guide for 2026

Everything about bioclimatic pergolas — how they work, louvre technology, motor systems and choosing a manufacturer.

What Is a Bioclimatic Pergola?

A bioclimatic pergola is a modern outdoor structure with rotating aluminium louvre blades that control sun, wind, rain and airflow. Unlike fixed canopies, the blades adjust from 0° to 135°, providing full waterproofing when closed and natural ventilation when open. An integrated drainage system channels rainwater through the support columns.

Manual vs Motorised Systems

Manual systems (Luxa 500) use a hand crank — no electrical connection needed. Motorised systems (Luxa 500M, 700) operate via 230V motor with remote control and integrate with smart home platforms like Somfy, Alexa and Google Home. Choose manual for budget projects and motorised for comfort-first installations.

Sizing and Configuration

Single module coverage: up to 16 m² with Luxa 700 (7,400 mm span) and 12 m² with Luxa 500. For larger areas, modules can be coupled side-by-side or in L/U configurations. Both freestanding and wall-mounted options available. Snow load capacity: 60–80 kg/m².

Maintenance and Lifespan

With 6063-T6 aluminium construction and TIGER Coatings QUALICOAT powder coating, bioclimatic pergolas offer 25+ years of maintenance-free use. No painting, varnishing or treatment required. Annual pressure washing is sufficient. Motor lifespan: 10,000+ cycles.
