Powder coating is the critical protective layer of any aluminium outdoor structure. Qualicoat Class 2 is the highest standard required for exposed outdoor applications.
Class 1: standard outdoor coating for normal climate. Class 2: enhanced weather resistance — exposed positions, high UV load, coastal proximity (within 10 km of sea). Florida weathering test: Class 1 = 1 year, Class 2 = 3 years. Maximum gloss loss: Class 1 ≤ 50%, Class 2 ≤ 30%.
Qualicoat requires minimum 60 µm mean film thickness (no single measurement below 40 µm). Aluminium must be pre-treated before coating: chemical degreasing and pickling, then chromium-free passivation (REACH-compliant). Alcodec systems are coated with TIGER Coatings powder to GSB standard.
Tender wording: 'Powder coating per Qualicoat Class 2 or GSB International. Mean film thickness ≥ 60 µm; no single measurement below 40 µm. Pre-treatment: chemical degreasing, pickling and chromium-free passivation. Compliance evidence via coater's certificate.'
